A 33-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing his three-year-old son by locking him in a washing machine and turning it on.

Christophe Champenois, from Meaux, near Paris, allegedly stripped Bastien naked and shut him in the machine to punish him for a prank at nursery school - throwing a classmate's drawing down a toilet.

He is then said to have run the cold cycle wash for a few minutes at their house, in the village of Germigny-l'Eveque.

The child, whom neighbours described as blond and angelic, died of head injuries on Friday night, French police said. His mother Charlene, 25, recovered him from the machine, according to Le Parisien newspaper.

She then ran to her neighbour, known only as Alice, and told her that Bastien had 'fallen down the stairs'. Alice told Le Parisien: 'I picked him up and his limbs were as loose as those of a rag doll. 'I felt his heart beat for the last time and then he died.'

They had been utterly devoted to each other in a marriage that lasted 70 years.
And last week Elizabeth Noble, 92, died just three days after her husband Fred, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 4, aged 96.
The couple, who lived in Wingate, County Durham, had been inseparable throughout their marriage and kept every note, birthday card and Valentine's wish they had ever sent each other.

Their family, while saddened by the loss, were comforted by the fact they were not apart for long.
On Wednesday they will all gather for the couple's joint funeral where Dame Vera Lynn's classic We'll Meet Again will be played.

Mr and Mrs Noble had met in 1936. Mr Noble proposed soon after but was then sent abroad with the Royal Tank Corps.
He sent a note saying: 'Cheerio, til we meet again' and it wasn't until New Year's Day 1940 that they were able to marry during a 48-hour period of leave.

While Mr Noble served in Afghanistan, India, Burma, the former Ceylon and France, his wife was nursing injured servicemen with the fear that her husband could be similarly hurt or killed.

The couple had two daughters Yvonne and Denise, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

'Having got to the age of 96 and 92, and having been so happily married for nearly 71 years, we think it is quite fitting an end for them to go so closely together.
'They talked about not wanting to go on without the other. My grandmother couldn't imagine living without my grandfather and granddad had been absolutely devoted to caring for her.'
The couple received letters from the Queen, the Prime Minister and Tony Blair, their former MP, on their platinum wedding anniversary.
Dr Rowland added: 'It is sad for the family, but we take comfort from the fact they didn't have to be apart for long.'

Here are 12 fantastic tiny pieces of art from a three-dimensional bull the size of a red blood cell create by Japanese Engineers to the Incredible Hulk in the pin of a needle!

"Little People" is a fantastic street art project by artist Slinkachu, where photos are taken of tiny figures that are placed in public locations throughout London. This one is called "Overpowered."

Willard Wigan is the creator of some of the world's smallest sculptures. The above scene is situated inside a sewing needle, it's a tribute to the Obama Family. Wigan takes months to complete a piece and works between heartbeats to avoid hand tremors. He uses a tiny surgical blade to carve his figures out of gold and grains of sand which are then mounted on pinheads.

Toothpick artist Steven Backman has carved this miniature replica of San Francisco's landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge. Measuring 1 7/8”(L) x 1/8”(W) x 3/4”(H), it was sculpted from one single toothpick and glue.

Online beauty site, FeelUnique commissioned artist Willard Wigan to create the world's first ever lipstick sculptures – of Brad and Angelina! The lippies, measuring 4mm by 9mm took over 50 hours to sculpt and will be auctioned off on the FeelUnique site, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Campaign.

Who says you can't put a camel through the eye of a needle? Russian miniaturist Nikolai Aldunin has fit seven through this one. The artist works between the beats of his heart, in order to keep his hands perfectly still. He creates works of art so tiny that a microscope is needed to see them.

A team of Japanese engineers created the smallest statue ever. A three-dimensional bull the size of a red blood cell has been etched in plastic by engineers at Osaka University in Japan. Measuring only 10 by 7 micrometers -- one micrometer is one-thousandth of a millimeter -- the bull is the smallest truly three-dimensional sculpture ever created.

This pin-head sized replica of the Lloyd's of London building, by Willard Wigan, has been sold for £94,000 at auction. The work, which took four months to be created using white gold and platinum, is no larger than a granule of sugar and must be viewed through a microscope.

Also by artist Steven Backman, this is a miniature replica of the Empire State Building.

Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo diligently carved hundreds of miniature ice figures as part of a recent installation for WWF, only to watch them slowly melt in the heat of the day. As the sun beat down on the tiny sculptures they stooped and slumped, lending an ephemeral quality to the already very cool installation.

A round-the-world sailor is feared to have been eaten by cannibals during a visit to a South Sea island.

Remains found in the embers of a camp fire are believed to be those of 40-year-old business adviser Stefan Ramin.

He apparently arranged to go on a traditional goat hunt in the forest after dropping anchor at Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia.

His girlfriend Heike Dorsch, 37, says she saw him depart with a local guide, named as Henri Haiti. Only the guide returned, she says, and he told her: 'There's been an accident. He needs help.'

Before she could rush into the forest, however, she claims Haiti chained her to a tree and sexually abused her.

She managed to escape hours later to alert authorities and they began a seven-day search for Mr Ramin.

Last week, the ashes were found in a valley by a squad of 22 police officers. Among the embers were bones including a jaw bone, teeth and melted metal – believed to be fillings.

Investigators believe a 'human body was hacked to pieces and burned'.

Haiti is missing and soldiers from the French overseas territory have joined police in the hunt for him.

The remains were flown to a hospital in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, and from there to Paris for DNA analysis to prove whether they are all that is left of Mr Ramin.
It was in 2008 that Mr Ramin, from Haselau in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, set out to sail the world in a catamaran with Miss Dorsch.

On Facebook he listed his interests as 'travelling, blue water sailing, kiting, kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, diving… actually everything which one can do on and under the water'.
The couple used an online blog to report their progress to friends and relatives.

Last month they dropped anchor in Nuku Hiva, largest of the Marquesas islands which over the centuries have featured in many reports of cannibalism.

French chief investigator José Thorel, based on Tahiti, did not rule out the possibility that the remains are of Mr Ramin but said the DNA evidence could take weeks to analyse. The German newspaper Bild said that Haiti was a 'suspected cannibal'.

It was not clear whether Miss Dorsch is still on the island or whether she has returned home to Germany.

Outside of horror films, cannibalism is virtually unheard of in the modern world. The Korowai of Papua New Guinea are one of the last surviving tribes to eat humans as a cultural practice.

Numbering about 3,000, they live in an area so remote they were unaware of the existence of anyone besides themselves until 1970.

Although the claims have not been verified, the Korowai reportedly eat the brain immediately, while it is still warm.

1. Katherine Knight (born: 1955)

Known as Australia's Hannibal, Katherine Knight was first Australian woman to be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Her first marriage was so violent that she even tried to strangle her husband, hard drinking David Kellett, on their wedding night. She explained it was because he fell asleep after only having intercourse three times. In her next relationship with David Saunders, Knight became so jealous that she cut the throat of his two-month-old dingo pup in front of him, in order to show him what would happen if he ever had an affair before. And although Knight's next 'lover' John Charles Thomas Price was well aware of her violent reputation, he allowed her move into his house and became her next victim. The relationship ended with Knight stabbing Price to death with a butcher's knife. Price's autopsy revealed that he had been stabbed at least 37 times, in both the back and front of his body with many of the wounds extending into vital organs. But that's not all. Few hours after Price had died, she skinned him and hung the skin from a meat hook on the architrave of a door to the lounge room. Then she cut off his head and put it in the soup pot, baked his buttocks, and prepared vegetables and gravy to accompany the 'roast'. The meal and a vindictive note were set out for the children, but luckily discovered by police before they arrived home.

2. Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614)

Elizabeth Bathory, a countess from the renowned Báthory family of Hungarian nobility, is considered to be the most prolific female serial killer in history. She is remembered as the Blood Countess or Blood Queen. After her husband's death, she and her collaborators were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of girls and young women, though the number for which they were convicted was 80. But Elizabeth herself was neither tried nor convicted. It is known that Elizabeth used molten wax, branding irons and knives to shed their blood. During the winter, she would execute girls by having them strip, led out into the snow, and then would pour water over them until they were frozen. And during the summer she would kill victims by having them strip, covered with honey, and left to be bitten and stung to death by various insects. Some girls were cut with scissors, or pricked with pins, or even prodded with burning irons or sharp spikes in a cage hung from the ceiling to provide her with a "blood shower." Four years before she died, she was imprisoned in the Csejte Castle, now in Slovakia, where she remained bricked in a set of rooms.

3. Mary Ann Cotton (1832-1873)

Mary Ann Cotton was an English serial killer believed to have murdered 21 people, mainly by arsenic poisoning. It was discovered that Mary Ann had murdered three of her husbands, a lover, a friend, her mother, and a dozen children, all of whom had died of stomach fevers. Her poisoned them all and her motive was either to gain insurance money or to pave way for a new marriage. 21 people close to her died and, believe it or not, up to 15 of them were members of her family. And all that happened within twenty years. At the end, Mary Ann Cotton was found guilty and hanged at Durham County Gaol.

4. Irma Grese (1923-1945)

Irma Ida Ilse Grese, an employee at the Nazi concentration camps of Ravensbrück, Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz, was convicted for crimes against humanity at the Belsen Trial and executed at 22 years of age. Although she was very young, Irma Greese, also known as the 'Bitch of Belsen' or 'Beast of Auschwitz,' was promoted to Senior Supervisor, which was the second highest ranking female in camp of Auschwitz. The accusations against Grese centred on her ill-treatment and murder of those imprisoned at the camps, including setting dogs on inmates, shootings and sadistic beatings with a whip. Witnesses testified that she used both physical and emotional methods to torture the camp's inmates and enjoyed shooting prisoners in cold blood. They also testified to acts of sadism, beatings and arbitrary shootings of prisoners, savaging of prisoners by her trained and allegedly half-starved dogs, and to her selecting prisoners for the gas chambers. After a fifty-three day trial, she was sentenced to hang.

5. Queen Mary I (1516-1558)

Mary I, the only child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon to survive childhood, was Queen regnant of England and Queen regnant of Ireland. She is remembered for restoring England to Roman Catholicism after succeeding her short-lived Protestant half brother, Edward VI. In that process, Mary had almost 300 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the Marian Persecutions. The medieval heresy laws were restored by Parliament, which meant that heretics could be killed and their property and holdings given over to the Crown. Her burning of Protestants had led people to call her 'Bloody Mary.' Her re-establishment of Roman Catholicism was reversed by her successor and half-sister, Elizabeth I.

6. Belle Gunness (1859-1908)

Belle Sorenson Gunness was a Norwegian-American serial killer. The physically very strong woman killed most of her suitors and boyfriends, and her two daughters. She may also have killed all of her children and both of her husbands, on different occasions. Her motive was collecting life insurance benefits… and also, the assets stolen or swindled from her suitors became her source of income. Some reports estimate that Gunness killed over 40 people over several decades and most of them were poisoned. Gunness was never caught for the murders and what happened to her was never known. On the record, her death is listed as April 1908, the last time she was seen alive.

7. Beverley Allitt (born: 1968)

Beverley Gail Allitt is a well-known serial killer who murdered four children and injured nine others that were in her care while working as a pediatric nurse. Her main method of murder was to inject the child with potassium chloride or insulin. Although convicted with death in nine cases, Allit attacked thirteen children over a sixty day period before being caught red-handed. She was sentenced to life imprisonment – to be served at Rampton Secure Hospital in Nottinghamshire. In 2005, the BBC made a dramatisation of the story, "Angel of Death", in which Charlie Brooks played the role of Allitt.

8. Gertrude Baniszewski (1929-1990)

Gertrude Baniszewski was an Indiana divorcée who oversaw and facilitated the prolonged torture, mutilation, and eventual murder of Sylvia Likens, a 16-year-old girl she had taken into her home. Baniszewski was given $20.00 a week to watch the Likens children from their parents who were traveling with the Flordia circus. When the Likens girls parents were late with their first weeks payment for the babysitting, Baniszewski decided to give Sylvia and her sister Jenny a beating… and her brutality escalated over the next three months. She also recruited others to help her beat the children. But that wasn't the worst. When Sylvia urinated on the mattress one night, the basement was made her prison. She was starved of any food and forced to eat and drink her own feces and urine. She died when she was knocked down onto the concrete floor when she was trying to get the attention of the neighbors. When police arrived, they found Sylvia lying on a mattress on a second-story bedroom. Her body was covered with scars, burns, and welts, and on her stomach was the words "i am a prostitute and proud of it" carved into her skin. When she was convicted of first-degree murder, the case was called "the single worst crime perpetrated against an individual in Indiana's history".

9. Myra Hindley (1942-2002)

Myra Hindley, known as the 'Moors Murderess,' is responsible for murders occurring in the Manchester area of Britain in the mid 1960's. She and Ian Brady are responsible for the kidnapping, torture, sexual abuse and murder of two teenagers and three children under the age of twelve. The murders are named 'Moors murders' because two of the victims were discovered in graves dug on Saddleworth Moor and third grave was discovered on the moor. Characterised as 'the most evil woman in Britain,' Hindley made several appeals against her life sentence, claiming she was a reformed woman and no longer a danger to society, but she was never released.

10. Marybeth Tinning (born: 1942)

Marybeth Tinning is an American serial killer currently serving a 20 years to life sentence after being convicted of the murder of one of her children. Her case is held to be one of the most extreme cases of Münchausen syndrome by proxy. Working as a nurse's aide, she was notorious for having killed nine of her own children by strangulating them and taking them to the hospital almost dead. For a very long time, hospital authorities thought that these deaths were a genetic problem in the family. But when Marybeth brought her adopted son to the hospital in an unconscious state, and he was later declared to be dead, the doctors began to suspect foul play. It was that nine of her healthy children died suddenly and usually without any rational explanation. Later, she was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

"I do not have a favourite sculpture as I become very fond of them all," she says. "I'm surrounded by them at home, they keep me company."

She first sketches her subject before painstakingly building up the shoulders and head by adding small bits of Plasticine. Once she is happy with the features the bust is then painted in acrylic.

This brave German Shepherd sits calmly with her owner - just minutes after burglars stabbed an eight inch blade into her skull.

The six-year-old family pet, named Bella, needed emergency surgery to remove the protruding knife after the horrific incident on Saturday.

This shocking picture shows how the robbers narrowly missed the animal's eyes as they plunged the deadly blade into her forehead.

Today Bella's owner Vernon Swart said he feared the worst when he saw the knife sticking out of her skull following the attack at his home in South Africa.
He said: 'I was in the house on Saturday morning when the neighbours called to say our dog was running around in the street with a massive knife in her head.
'I didn't believe them but when I went outside I saw it for myself.
'The neighbours said they had caught intruders trying to enter their home and they must have then tried to get into my place when Bella attacked them in our garden.
'One of them had stabbed her right in the head and the end of the knife was poking out between her eyes.
'I feared the worst and assumed she was going to die, but incredibly she was running around as if nothing had happened.'
Mr Swart, a professional artist from Stellenbosch near Cape Town, said he rushed Bella to the vet for surgery after the stabbing.
He said: 'My wife was at work but she came home and we drove down to the vet.
'Stella was on the back seat and every time she turned her head the handle of the knife banged against the window.
'She obviously couldn't feel anything as she was acting normally, but it looked horrific.

'He put her under an anaesthetic and then pulled the blade out.
'It was imbedded so far into her skull that he had to put his knees up against Bella's head and lever it with his arms.
'When we saw the size of the knife we were absolutely shocked.
'The vet said it must have missed her brain by fractions of a centimetre and otherwise she would have been dead.'
The eight inch diver's knife was later handed to the police as evidence after the surgery.
Detectives confirmed they had opened a case of malicious damage to property following the incident.
They were today hunting for the suspected thieves, who ran away after the attempted break-in.
Meanwhile Bella was recovering at home after her ordeal.
Mr Swart said: 'She's been lying beside the fire and we've been treating her to all sorts of nice food, but she seems absolutely fine.
'People keep coming to look at her but she can't understand what all the fuss is about.'
He added: 'We're just so relieved that she's okay.
'She's been with our family for ages and we'd have been devastated to have lost her.
'I've told the police that if they find the guys who did this we'd like to leave them alone in a room for a few minutes with Bella, and she'd quickly get her revenge

A jet carrying 163 people broke in half as it crash-landed in the South American country of Guyana.
Incredibly, nobody was killed and only a few passengers were injured after the Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 from New York overshot the runway at Georgetown's Cheddi Jagan airport in wet weather.
It slid through a chain-link fence and barely missed a 200-foot ravine. Had it fallen into the ravine it would have almost certainly killed crew and passengers.

Lucky escape: Miraculously no-one on board the Caribbean Airlines jet was killed when it crashed in Guyana

The crash happened just after midnight local time as it arrived from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, where it had made a stop before continuing its flight to Georgetown.
'It's an absolute miracle what happened here in Georgetown,' said Caribbean Airlines chairman George Nicholas, as he visited the crash site.
'Everything started caving in and the girl next to me just sat there motionless in shock,' said passenger Betsy Myndyllo, who escaped with the help of her nephews and left the crash on foot, in the dark, arriving at the terminal 20 minutes later.
'I saw death flash before me,' said Guyanese-born Maxine Eversley, whose husband and niece were injured as they jumped to safety after the crash.
Eversley was one of the 96 U.S. passport holders on the plane, most of them believed to be Guyanese-born.
One woman said simply 'it was terror', while another described how the passengers' applause at the safe landing 'turned to screams' when they released the plane had broken in half.

Caribbean Airlines said it did not know the cause of the accident, which happened during good visibility and light rain.
Investigators from the U.S. and Guyana were sent to retrieve the black box.
The country's health minister, Leslie Ramsammy, told French news agency Agence France Presse that one passenger suffered a broken leg while several others walked away with minor bruises.
All of them were taken to a hospital in Georgetown. Flight BW 523 was carrying 157 passengers and six crew, the airline said in a statement.

She escaped the craft by hopping on to the wing and and then on to the dirt track outside the runway fence.

'I had to pay, but in times of emergencies, you don't charge people for a ride.'

The crocodile farm, used as a tourist attraction, houses some 80,000 crocodiles and is the largest in Thailand.

Regular crocodile shows are staged during which zookeepers place their heads inside the reptiles' mouths.
However, the farm doesn't just contain crocodiles.
As you'd expect from these pictures, monkeys and tigers also live there, alongside elephants, lions, horses and hippopotamuses.

Whose picture is this?

The above picture is a picture of Lam Kor-Wan, the very first Hong Kong serial killer. He killed four women in four nights.

I know this story after watching the CI (Crime and Investigation, Channel 732 Astro) at 2 this afternoon.

Here is the list of victims he had killed:

Chan Fung-lan, female, age 22, body found in seven separate pieces in the Shing Mun River, New Territories.

Chan Mong Kip, age 31, body found in a rice bag near Tai Hang Road, Hong Kong Island.

Leung Sau-wan, female, age unknown, body found in a rice bag near Tai Hang Road, Hong Kong Island.

Leung Wai-sum, female, age 17, body found in a rice bag near Tai Hang Road, Hong Kong Island.

Lam who worked as a taxi driver, would pick up female passengers, strangle them with electrical wire. He then brought the victim to his house, took pictures and video of the victims and filming himself performing an act of necrophilia (doing sex to a corp) with his fourth victim. Lam cut off their sexual organ (breast and pubic), then put them in Tupperware containers with preservative liquid. The other body parts was disposed in some places via his taxi.

What's the motive of this murder? Probably mental disorder...! He ever claimed that he is a God messenger. God told him to kill the women. Nevertheless, the prosecution has rejected the asylum motives as all he works well planned. He actually too eager to know the female anatomy, as he ever work as a nude woman photographer.

On April 8, 1983 at the end of a 21 day trial with a seven member all male jury, Lam was found guilty of four counts of murder and sentenced to death by hanging. On the 29th August 1984 Lam's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, as was the tradition before the abolition of the death penalty in 1993. He is currently serving his life sentence at Shek Pik Prison.

Artist Draws Portraits Using the Ashes of Her Subjects

Raven J. Collins thinks she may be the only artist in the world to brush the raw ashes of a deceased person onto a pencil portrait.
Using ashes as a medium is a growing trend in the artwork, but while some are mixing it with paint to create abstract works, moulding them into bizarre sculptures, or even compressing and using it as pencil filling (like lead), Raven Collins uses the ashes to create commission portraits of the deceased, whether they be human or animal. Sheâ€™s only been doing it for a while, but ash-portraits already make up 90% of her business.
As cremation becomes the more popular option in the funeral industry, the number of choices of what to do with the ashes also increases. Some people prefer to keep them in a fancy urn, others spill them into the ocean or over a peaceful pasture, but more and more people opt to incorporate their loved-onesâ€™ remains into various artworks. Artists like Raven sometimes get referrals from funeral homes, but most of their advertising is word of mouth and online exposure.

Collinsâ€™ idea was inspired by a tragic even that occurred two years ago. Her nephews Gavin, 3, and Sebastian, 1, died during a fire in Tampa, and even though she had been drawing portraits since high-school, the boysâ€™ portraits were the hardest the 37-year-old artist ever had to do. In her suffering, she came up with the idea of incorporating the deceasedâ€™s ashes into their portraits. Her tragic experience helps Raven Collins to connect with her clients and better understand what they want in a portrait.

Normally she receives a small amount of ashes in the mail, which she puts into a mortar and grinds to a fine powder, using a pestle. All it takes is a table spoon or less, then she adds a liquid to create a paste which she spreads over a drawn portrait, using a Q-tip. They can be spread anywhere in the portrait, in the hair of the subject, on a lapel, somewhere in the corner, but never on the face.

The 76-year-old woman walked down the hallway of Clearview Addictions Clinic, searching for the right department. She passed signs for the "Heroin Addiction Department (HAD)," the "Smoking Addiction Department (SAD)" and the "Bingo Addiction Department (BAD)." Then she spotted the department she was looking for: "Facebook Addiction Department (FAD)."

It was the busiest department in the clinic, with about three dozen people filling the waiting room, most of them staring blankly into their Blackberries and iPhones. A middle-aged man with unkempt hair was pacing the room, muttering,"I need to milk my cows. I need to milk my cows."

Fried tarantulas – Cambodia

An arachnophobe's worst nightmare comes fried and crunchy in Cambodia. In Phnom Penh markets and in the town of Skuon, locals deep fry spiders for locals and adventurous tourists alike. Buy one of these crispy snacks from a wandering hawker and you may even get to play with a live tarantula before tucking into one of his hairy brothers. The abdomen is only for the truly brave and is said to taste like "licking damp cobwebs."

Cuy (guinea pig) – Peru

They may look cute in the classroom but a guinea pig on your plate looks less adorable. Peruvian families keep guinea pigs as they are a good source of protein for villagers living up in the Andes. Cuy, as they are called, are generally roasted before they are served with all limbs and the head attached. There is not a great deal of meat on them and the skin can be rather rubbery but otherwise they taste similar to rabbit.

Casu marzu – Sardinia

This is a Sardinian speciality that comes with a health warning. Most food that's crawling with maggots finds its way into the bin but the decomposition of this "rotten cheese" is positively encouraged. Pecorino Sardo is set aside so that cheese flies can lay eggs inside the rind which then hatch into crawling maggots. These feed on the cheese, aiding fermentation and producing a pungent smell. Officially banned in the EU, the maggots are eaten live with the cheese, assuming they haven't jumped away first – some can jump up to 15cm.

Civet excrement coffee – Asia

Considered a delicacy in parts of Asia, these coffee beans are roasted after passing through the digestive system of a civet. Farmers on coffee plantations allow the weasel-like creatures to eat their crop in order to collect their bean-filled droppings for a steamy and surprisingly chocolatey beverage. While it has yet to make the menu at Starbucks, the beans can be bought in shops in London, including Selfridges.

Fugu – Japan

Certainly not as repugnant as some of the other dishes on our menu, fugu – or puffer fish – has nevertheless become a notorious delicacy thanks to the fact that eating it can be fatal unless it is properly prepared. The fish's liver, ovaries and skin contains large amounts of the poison tetrodotoxin and there is no known antidote.

Balut – Philippines

Sometimes described as "eggs with legs", Balut is an utterly gruesome – by some Western standards – delicacy from the Philippines. A common, everyday food, it is a fertilised duck or chicken egg containing a nearly-developed embryo – including feathers, feet, et al – that is boiled and eaten straight out of the shell. If you're not too squeamish, there are plenty of videos on YouTube.

Chicken feet – Worldwide

A common part of Asian, Jamaican and Peruvian cuisine, chicken feet are often served in soup or with black bean sauce. The foot is largely cartilage, while there are lots of small bones, so they certainly aren't for everyone.

Live octopus – Japan and Korea

Many Westerners would find the practice of eating squirming octopus legs particularly hard to digest. It can seem cruel to the bystander, especially when the octopuses wrap themselves around the diner's chopsticks in an attempt not to be eaten. According to one diner's report, the wriggly bits can taste like "a party in your mouth" – but the suckers can be dangerous if they stick on the way down.

Scorpions – China, Vietnam

Like tarantulas, scorpions are usually eaten fried, though are also served coated in chocolate or in a soup. They are said to possess medicinal qualities, and are popular with tourists at Beijing's famous night market, alongside crickets, sea horses and countless other appetisers.

Witchetty grub – Australia

An Australian term for large, white moth larvae, witchetty grubs are a staple in the Aboriginal diet. They can be eaten alive or cooked and are an excellent source of protein. They are said to taste like almonds.

Durian fruit – Southeast Asia

The smell of durian is so disagreeable that it has been banned from taxis, hire cars and public transport throughout southeast Asia. The novelist Anthony Burgess described it as "like eating sweet raspberry in the lavatory".

Seagull wine – Arctic Circle

Not something you're likely to find down your local Brakespeares, seagull wine is an invention of Inuits in desperate need of a drink during those cold Arctic nights. Simply stuff a dead seagull (in bits, or whole) into a bottle of water and leave in the sun.

Rat – Vietnam, China, Thailand, Laos

Rats destroy crops in rural Vietnam so farmers catch them, wrap them in banana leaves and sell them as a dinnertime treat. A roasted version can often be seen on the end of a stick in Thailand. Bats on a stick are also popular.

Kumis/Airag – Central Asia

Made from fermented mare's milk, Kumis is an important drink for many Central Asian cultures. It is sour, slightly alcoholic and a rich source of vitamins and minerals – ideal for long treks across the Steppes.

Bull's penis – China

A traditional aphrodesiac – for obvious reasons – bull's penis is eaten in various parts of the Far East. It was revealed last year that China's Olympic athletes even requested bull's penis soup on their weekly menus. Whether this contributed to their record haul of 51 gold medals, we'll never know.

Seal flipper pie – Canada

Commonly eaten at Easter, seal flipper pie is a traditional dish from the Canadian province of Newfoundland. The internet is awash with recipes, usually featuring root vegetables, pork fat and a dash of Worcestershire sauce.

Smalahove (sheep's head) – Norway

A traditional Christmas dish, Smalahove is made by boiling a salted lamb's head (minus the wool and brains, thankfully) for around three hours. Etiquette dictates that the ears and eyes are eaten first, while they are still warm, before the rest of the head is consumed, from front to back. The tongue and eye muscles are considered the prime cuts.

New photos obtained by Survival International show isolated Indians in never-seen-before detail. The Indians are living in Brazil, near the Peruvian border, and are featured in the 'Jungles' episode of BBC1's 'Human Planet' (Thurs 3 Feb, 8pm, UK only).

The pictures were taken by Brazil's Indian Affairs Department, which has authorized Survival to use them as part of its campaign to protect their territory. They reveal a thriving, healthy community with baskets full of manioc and papaya fresh from their gardens.

The tribe's survival is in serious jeopardy as an influx of illegal loggers invades the Peru side of the border. Brazilian authorities believe the influx of loggers is pushing isolated Indians from Peru into Brazil, and the two groups are likely to come into conflict.

Survival and other NGOs have been campaigning for years for the Peruvian government to act decisively to stop the invasion, but little has been done.

Last year an American organization, Upper Amazon Conservancy, carried out the latest of several overflights on the Peru side, uncovering further evidence of illegal logging in a protected area.

Marcos Apurinã, Coordinator of Brazil's Amazon Indian organization COIAB said today, 'It is necessary to reaffirm that these peoples exist, so we support the use of images that prove these facts. These peoples have had their most fundamental rights, particularly their right to life, ignored … it is therefore crucial that we protect them.'

Renowned Brazilian Indian leader Davi Kopenawa Yanomami said today, 'The place where the Indians live, fish, hunt and plant must be protected. That is why it is useful to show pictures of the uncontacted Indians, for the whole world to know that they are there in their forest and that the authorities must respect their right to live there.'

Peru's Amazon Indian organisation AIDESEP issued a statement saying, 'We are deeply troubled by the authorities' lack of action… despite complaints from Peru and abroad against illegal logging, nothing has been done.'

TV presenter Bruce Parry of hit TV series Tribe said, 'Protecting the land where uncontacted tribes live is of global importance. We have consistently failed to introduce them to our world without inflicting terrible traumas. It is for them to decide when they want to join our world. Not us.'

Survival's Director Stephen Corry said today, 'The illegal loggers will destroy this tribe. It's vital that the Peruvian government stop them before time runs out. The people in these photos are self-evidently healthy and thriving. What they need from us is their territory protected, so that they can make their own choices about their future.
'But this area is now at real risk, and if the wave of illegal logging isn't stopped fast, their future will be taken out of their hands. This isn't just a possibility: it's irrefutable history, rewritten on the graves of countless tribes for the last five centuries.

They live in a 100-room, four storey house set amidst the hills of Baktwang village in the Indian state of Mizoram, where the wives sleep in giant communal dormitories.

Mr Chana told the Sun: 'Today I feel like God's special child. He's given me so many people to look after.

'I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the world's largest family.'

The family is organised with almost military discipline, with the oldest wife Zathiangi organising her fellow partners to perform household chores such as cleaning, washing and preparing meals.

One evening meal can see them pluck 30 chickens, peel 132lb of potatoes and boil up to 220lb of rice.

Coincidentally, Mr Chana is also head of a sect that allows members to take as many wives as he wants.

He even married ten women in one year, when he was at his most prolific, and enjoys his own double bed while his wives have to make do with communal dormitories.

Rinkmini, one of Mr Chana's wives who is 35 years old, said: 'We stay around him as he is the most important person in the house. He is the most handsome person in the village.

She says Mr Chana noticed her on a morning walk in the village 18 years ago and wrote her a letter asking for her hand in marriage.

Preventing and Fixing Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Many people have bad breath without even realizing it. This can cripple your likelihood of enjoying a healthy social life, finding a significant other, and even advancement in your career. Halitosis or bad breath is mostly a result of poor hygiene and is completely treatable. It is quite easy to prevent and fix bad breath with the following guidelines.

Brush your teeth and scrape your tongue first thing every morning, and also after each time you take a nap. Foul-smelling bacteria have had a chance to take over your mouth while you slept, and are most likely causing yucky "morning breath." Tongue scrapers can be found in most health food stores, and also in drug stores and convenience stores as they become more popular.

After you brush your teeth and scrape your tongue, rinse your mouth thoroughly and gargle with fresh, cool water. This is a very important step, one that many people overlook. Nobody likes to smell your breath when it's laden with dirty, used toothpaste scum.

Drink plenty of water - Insuring that you drink plenty of water throughout the day can help to control bad breath (halitosis). This can be an especially important consideration for those people who suffer from xerostomia (chronically dry mouths).

If you allow yourself to become dehydrated your body will try to conserve moisture by reducing its production of saliva. Saliva has a cleansing and diluting effect on the bacteria and bacterial waste products that cause bad breath. A reduction in the amount of saliva in your mouth can make it harder for you to control odors associated with your breath.

Rinse your mouth with water often - Rinsing with water can mitigate bad breath problems for brief periods of time. Rinsing will both dilute and partially remove the bacterial waste products that are the cause of breath odors.
Stimulate your mouth's flow of saliva - You can help to minimize bad breath odors by stimulating your body's flow of saliva. This is because saliva has a cleansing and diluting effect on the bacteria and bacterial waste products that cause bad breath.
One way to stimulate salivary flow is to chew on something. Doing so will trick your body in to thinking that it is getting a meal. And in preparation for digesting this meal your body will increase its production of saliva.

Chewing gum, cloves, breath mints, or lozenges can also be used to stimulate salivary flow. If you elect to use one of these products make sure it is sugar-free since sweets will promote the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay.

After you eat or drink anything (besides water), thoroughly rinse your mouth and gargle with water. Use this practice without fail, day and night, and you will keep abreast of nasty bacteria buildup in your mouth, which cause bad breath. Run your tongue along the surfaces of your teeth throughout the day, and if you ever notice any plaque buildup, brush your teeth again and rinse thoroughly with water, making sure that you feel your teeth, not plaque buildup, which is a contributing factor in bad breath.

Fixing Bad Breath on the Spot -

Drink water and ask for lemon to be included. Surreptitiously squeeze as much of the lemon into the water as possible, as it will help cover up the odor.

Chew a piece of gum or eat some mint candy.

Gargle with salt to neutralise some of the odour.

Sneak a spoon into the bathroom. Check to make sure you're alone. Look into the mirror, stick out your tongue and check for a pasty white goo on it. Turn the spoon upside down and use it to scrape your tongue, using a back to front motion. If you can't manage to sneak off with a spoon, head to the restroom, wash your hands, use your fingernails to scrape your tongue.

Tempestt Henderson, a 19-year-old girl from Florida, has a rather peculiar addiction – she can’t help eating soap bars and washing powder. There are worst things to be addicted to, but this has to be one of the strangest.

The young girl remembers she loved the smell of washing powder on her mother’s cardigan and on her bed sheets, and so do many other people, but that doesn’t make them want to stuff their face with the toxic substance. But that’s exactly what Tempestt felt when she first dipped her fingers in washing powder and licked it off. ‘I dabbed the powder onto my tongue and it tasted so sweet, and salty…it just felt so right. I was hooked straight away.’ says the young nursing student.

She new that stuff was hazardous to her health, but she loved it so much she couldn’t stay away from it. From the moment she woke up, she would give in to her washing powder craving, ignoring the warning labels. Before she knew it, Tempestt began licking off the soap bubbles of her skin in the shower, and popping tiny chunks of soap in her mouth and suck on them. Eating soap felt much cleaner than just washing with it, and the young girl claims that at one point she would go through five bars of soap in a week.

Six months passed since her unnatural craving for soap and washing powder set in, and Tempest was finally beginning to realize the dangers she was exposing herself to, so she sought medical advice. She was immediately diagnosed with PICA, a rare condition that causes people to eat non-nutritive substances like metal, chalk and even sand. It’s usually caused by mineral deficiency, but in Tempestt’s case, the condition is believed to have been caused by stress. The girl’s boyfriend had broken up with her, before heading off to college, and she says that simply devastated her.

Regardless of what caused her to start eating soap and washing powder, Tempestt needed to stop as soon as possible, as the complications from ingesting such toxic chemicals were putting her life at risk. Doctors gave her intensive Cognitive-behavioral therapy, to help her think of positive things when she felt like eating soap, and also encouraged her to get out more, take long walks, and avoid places where soap or detergent are available, like bathrooms and laundromats…She’s using liquid soap now, and for some reason it doesn’t appeal to her at all.

Tempest Henderson has been “clean” since September 2010, and hopes she will never give in to eating soap or washing powder ever again, but she knows she still faces a long road of recovery.

Artist Paige Thompson had a foxy idea when she puckered up in front of the mirror and started to paint these amazing animal designs - on her own lips.

Now her unique take on face-painting has become an Internet sensation, attracting thousands of followers to her website and sparking demand for new creations.

The 21-year-old was feeling bored when she stumbled across some Halloween make-up she had as a child and began to paint colourful and cute animals on her mouth before photographing them.

She started with a bumblebee, then a fox, and as her menagerie grew she christened them 'Animal-ipsticks'.

So far Paige has created abumblebee, black cat, fox, crab, caterpillar, hippo, chameleon andpanda, sticking to a basic pallette of red, blue, yellow, green, blackand white.

Her childhood set of water-basedpaints came with a small brush but she has since bought other brushesto allow her to get better detail. But she refuses to spend money onexpensive branded make-up.

Paige, from Texas, was inspired to try her own lipstick art after admiring the face-painting of other artists.

'My first animal-lipstick, thebumblebee, wasn't even formed as an idea until I painted my lips yellowand added some random black stripes. It was then apparent that a facewas needed.

'I thought the result was cute, so I made a few more. I never imagined so many people would love these photos.'

The next animals in line for Paige's lip-smacking treatment are be a jaguar, zebra, monkey, parrot and a dog.
